PHO Visiting Speaker: Accelerating Progress on Prevention of Obesity

Abstract:

For the past year, Dr. Kelder has served on an Institute of Medicine Committee called Accelerating Progress on Obesity Prevention. He was involved in prioritizing actions schools should take to prevent childhood obesity. The full report will be available May 2012 and covers school strategies, as well as those taken by communities, health care, food marketing and agriculture. In his talk, Dr. Kelder will summarize the proposed child and school strategies related to healthy eating and physical activity.

Dr. Steven Kelder
Dr. Steven Kelder is professor, division of epidemiology, University of Texas School of Public Health and co-director of the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living. He is one of the lead investigators for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsed Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) initiative – an evidence-informed and research-based program that guides elementary schools, families and children in the process of being healthy. This initiative reaches over a million children in Texas. He contributed to the creation of the CDC’s School Health Index, a school self-assessment tool designed to assist schools to meet CDC school health guidelines.
