Abstract:

There is now little doubt that the antecedents of adult health begin in childhood.  It is estimated that by the end of childhood, 40% of Canada’s children are dealing with complications of overweight or obesity, asthma, injury, behaviour problems or learning difficulties. Unknowingly, we are marching our children down a thorny path to a battle with adult chronic disease.  To stem this tide, new ways of thinking about chronic disease which target causal elements during early life need to be developed.  TARGet Kids! is a CIHR funded platform to advance the scientific basis for preventive services for young children.  With state of the art data management, web based technology and high throughput laboratory measurement TARGet Kids! is a highly efficient platform to perform observational and interventional studies for young children.

Jonathon Maguire

Dr. Jonathon Maguire is a staff pediatrician at St. Michael’s Hospital and a Scientist in the Applied Health Research Centre of the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute of St. Michael’s Hospital. He is an assistant professor in the departments of Pediatrics and Health Policy Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.  His research interests focus on clinical trials involving nutrition and development in young children as well as the creation of tools to facilitate evidence informed child health practice.  He is a lead investigator in the development of a CIHR funded Canadian practice based primary care research network for children called TARGet Kids!
