 Update on (some) federal obesity activities with a focus on healthy eating awareness and education

This presentation will provide an overview of some knowledge development activities underway with federal/provincial/territorial (FPT) governments to support the implementation of Curbing Childhood Obesity: A FPT Framework for Action. Areas under development include:

  • nutrition criteria for school food guidelines
  • integrating healthy eating in the after-school time period
  • measuring the food environment
  • the role of nutrition and food skills education in Canadian public schools.  

The presenter will also focus on the multi-year, multi-stakeholder Healthy Eating Awareness and Education Initiative. Its aim is to improve awareness, knowledge and implementation of healthy eating and will be rolled out in three phases:

  1. Nutrition facts education
  2. Healthy eating and sodium reduction
  3. Healthy eating and healthy weights, with a focus on food skills.


Presenter: Hasan Hutchinson

Hasan Hutchinson is the director general of the Office of Nutrition Policy and Promotion at Health Canada. As the federal focal point for public health nutrition and healthy eating, the office promotes the nutritional health and wellbeing of Canadians by promoting and implementing evidence-based nutrition policies and standards. Hasan participates in a number of international and national committees, including the WHO Global Network on Nutrition, the PAHO Sodium Awareness and Education Committee, the F/P/T Group on Nutrition and the Federal Dietary Reference Intakes Steering Committee. He was also chair of Canada’s Sodium Working Group. Before working at Health Canada, Hasan was a faculty member in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at McGill University. Hasan holds a doctorate in quantitative genetics and in naturopathic medicine.
