This presentation will provide an overview of the recently published report, Seven More Years: The impact of smoking, alcohol, diet, physical activity and stress on health and life expectancy in Ontario.
There are initial indications that the project engaged a wide audience that included key policy decision-makers and the general public (through traditional and new social media). This presentation will discuss how the report was developed with a focus on making it an informative and effective resource for different stakeholders and audiences.

Presenter: Dr. Doug Manuel |
Dr. Doug Manuel is a senior scientist of Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and a senior medical advisor for Statistics Canada. He holds a Canadian Institute for Health Research Chair in Applied Public Health. Dr. Manuel is a clinical scientist at the C.T. Lamont Primary Health Care Research Centre and Elizabeth Bruyère Research Institute and an associate professor in the departments of family medicine and epidemiology and community medicine at the University of Ottawa. He is also the co-lead for population health intervention research at Ontario’s Population Health Improvement Research Network and a scientist at the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, where he worked for 10 years prior to moving to Ottawa in 2008. He holds a master’s in epidemiology and has Royal College specialization in public health and preventive medicine. For the past 20 years, Dr. Manuel has been a primary care clinician in rural, remote and underserved Canadian communities.
Dr. Manuel’s research interest is the population health impact assessment of health interventions and the assessment of population health status. He has developed performance measures and planning tools for health planning. He has also written on how societies with the best population health have achieved their success. |
