Lunch and Learn: Health Hazard & Hoarding

Description:

Objective: To give a brief overview of hoarding, typical behaviours and illnesses associated with hoarding. The presentation will review common health and safety concerns in hoarding situations as well as an OPH case study to demonstrate a multi-agency response to a situation in Ottawa.


Audience:
Infection Control Professionals, Health Care Professionals in Acute, Long-term, and Community Care, Occupational Health and Safety, and Public Health Professionals.


Presenter(s): Susan Phypers, Ottawa Public Health Unit

Susan Phypers is one of three (Public Health Nurse) PHNs with the Home Visit Response Team at Ottawa Public Health (OPH). This team responds to individuals who are found in deteriorating health and living conditions some of which are hoarding situations. PHNs collaborate with Public Health Inspectors and other municipal/community partners to identify the risks and address barriers to services that could improve the client’s overall health.
