    Consultation phase wrapping up

Public Health Ontario is developing its 2014-2019 strategic plan with input from clients, stakeholders and staff. The new plan will guide PHO’s operations over the next five years, beginning in April 2014.

More than 300 clients and stakeholders participated in consultation sessions over the past months, including eight regional consultations and a consultation with provincial colleagues in Toronto.

“Our clients and stakeholders have provided us with a wealth of information and ideas to consider as we develop our new plan. They have also given us valuable insights about our current products and services and how these can be improved to better support them in their work. We are very grateful to everyone who participated.”

    Vivek Goel
President and CEO, Public Health Ontario

At a series of regional consultation sessions in Brantford, Cornwall, Kingston, Mississauga, Ottawa, Sarnia, Thunder Bay, and Whitby, PHO heard feedback on PHO’s current programs and services, and advice on where we need to go next as we set PHO’s future directions.

Each regional consultation session was attended by 20 to 50 clients identified with the help of regional PHO staff. Participants represented the breadth of our clients and stakeholders, including health care professionals working in laboratories, hospitals, long-term care, home care, community health centres, community care as well as from 27 of Ontario’s 36 public health units. In all, more than 210 people were consulted.

Here’s what some regional consultation session participants had to say about the process.

“Good meeting structure and process. Friendly people. Sincere effort to listen and gather input. Increased my interest and investment in PHO in general and in its strategic planning process."

Cornwall consultation participants explore what areas PHO should focus on in its new strategic plan.
“The reading ahead of time was good to inform the process. I liked the targeted worksheets and opportunity for dialogue.”
    – Kingston
“Very interactive. Well organized and facilitated. Gave me a better understanding of PHO.”
    – Thunder Bay
Whitby consultation participants discuss what PHO should start, stop and continue doing to better serve its clients and stakeholders.
“The dialogue that took place amongst everyone was productive and positive. Having different stakeholders contribute their ideas and pose questions from their different perspectives was informative and useful."
    – Sarnia

    Emerging Directions

Client and stakeholder input – along with the invaluable contributions of our employees and Board of Directors – have led to the development of five emerging strategic directions:

    • Support the public health sector in implementing its collective areas of focus
    • Advance public health body of evidence
    • Create meaningful population health information
    • Enable policy and practice action
    • Build a stronger PHO

These emerging directions are being developed further, along with other elements of the new strategic plan, over the next couple of months. The goal is to finalize the plan this summer and release PHO’s new strategic plan in the fall 2013.

More details on key findings and emerging directions will be shared during two webinars in May. Invitations are going out shortly to all those invited to or who attended a regional consultation session.
