| Announcement regarding the appointment of Dr. Vivek Goel, President and CEO Designate from Chair, Board of Directors, Dr. David Walker |
SUBJECT: CEO Appointment
I am writing you today as founding Chair of the Board of Directors of Ontario’s new Agency for Health Protection and Promotion. After a comprehensive international search that generated a truly outstanding response from public health and health care leaders around the world, I am honoured to be able to announce the appointment of Dr. Vivek Goel as the Agency’s founding President and Chief Executive Officer, effective July 1, 2008.
Dr. Goel is currently Vice-President and Provost and at the University of Toronto. He is a Professor in the Departments of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation and Public Health Sciences at the University of Toronto. Dr. Goel holds a medical degree from McGill University, specialty training in community medicine, a Master's degree in Health Administration from the University of Toronto and a Master's degree in Biostatistics from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Dr. Goel has been engaged in a broad range of research activities related to public health, particularly focusing on chronic disease prevention and control. The areas he has worked on include the economic evaluation of health care interventions, optimization of the use of laboratory tests in the periodic health examination and the development of measures for health status assessment. He was engaged in the conception of the ICES practice patterns ‘Atlas’ series, the creation of innovative methods for informing front-line health providers about the results of health research, and in training and supervising numerous graduate and professional students. In his roles at the University of Toronto he has been engaged in many areas including academic, budget and space planning, academic human resources, information technology services and emergency response – including leading the University’s efforts in managing SARS.
In closing, I must acknowledge and thank the Honourable George Smitherman for recognizing and supporting the creation of the Agency. I would also like to express my profound satisfaction that, with this initiative and with many others since SARS, Ontario has had the wisdom to both learn and change. Those of us who called for fundamental changes post-SARS can take pride that our work is not simply gathering dust. At the same time, there is some humility in the realization that there is much more work to be done. I look forward to working with Dr. Goel and my colleagues on the Board as we strive to improve public health in this province.
