Public Health Ontario (PHO) launched Ontario Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP) in August 2011. A partnership of Public Health Ontario and the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), ASP will evaluate the consequences of inappropriate antibiotic use on patient health and health care costs, including increased microbial resistance, toxicity, hospital lengths of stay, as well as increased costs to patients, hospitals and funders. The core program team of PHO and OHA staff will be assisted by an expert advisory committee with representation from across Ontario and professional disciplines to provide authoritative advice and direction. The goal is to establish a province-wide, tailored, sustainable ASP for Ontario's hospitals. It will be implemented in a phased and collaborative approach. Read more about the program goals here.
