Message from the President and CEO
Chronic diseases are a significant burden to our health care system, economy and quality of life. Working with our partners in public health to prevent and reduce chronic disease is a priority for Public Health Ontario. On March 20, Public Health Ontario and Cancer Care Ontario (CCO) will release a joint report: Taking Action to Prevent Chronic Disease: Recommendations for a Healthier Ontario. Its 22 recommendations reflect the best available evidence for how the Ontario government can support the reduction of risk factors for chronic disease, build its capacity for prevention and ensure all Ontarians have equal opportunities for health.
We would be delighted if you could join me and CCO president and CEO Dr. Michael Sherar on March 20 for the release of Taking Action to Prevent Chronic Disease at the Toronto Board of Trade.
Just a few weeks later, the themes of prevention, health promotion and collaboration will be the foundation of the Ontario Public Health Convention (TOPHC) 2012 from April 2-5. At TOPHC, Public Health Ontario and the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) will release a joint report on The Impact of Smoking, Alcohol, Diet, Physical Activity and Stress on Health and Life Expectancy in Ontario, which examines behavioural risk factors and their impact on life expectancy and health-adjusted life expectancy in Ontario.
I hope that you will be able to join us at TOPHC for the opportunity to meet with and learn from the many partners that are engaged in public health in Ontario.

What’s new @ PHO
As of April 1, 2012, the Alcohol Policy Network (APN) will transition to Public Health Ontario. Public Health Ontario will deliver APN services as part of its capacity building services under the direction of Dr. Heather Manson and her Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention team. Public health practitioners will benefit from the transfer of services through increased access to PHO’s scientists, content experts, applied research and our capacity for program evaluation, planning and knowledge exchange.
On March 2, 2012, Public Health Ontario hosted its first in a three part series of 2012 Locally Driven Collaborative Projects (LDCP) workshops. LCCPs support research and program evaluation projects that explore a topic, intervention or program related to a critical public health issue. Seventy-eight participants from twenty-seven health units worked together to determine the priorities for the 2012 LDCP. Registration is now open for public health units and other collaborators to join Workshop 2 in April.
Infrastructure Ontario has announced the selection of Diamond Schmitt Architects to provide architectural design services for Public Health Ontario’s new Toronto public health laboratory at MaRS Phase 2.

Les maladies chroniques sont un important fardeau pour notre système de soins de santé, notre économie et notre qualité de vie. La collaboration avec nos partenaires de la santé publique pour prévenir et réduire les maladies chroniques est une priorité chez Santé publique Ontario (SPO). Le 20 mars, SPO et Action Cancer Ontario (ACO) publieront un rapport conjoint intitulé Agir pour prévenir les maladies chroniques : Recommandations pour améliorer la santé de la population ontarienne. Les 22 recommandations du rapport reflètent les meilleures données probantes à notre disposition sur la façon dont le gouvernement de l’Ontario peut appuyer la réduction des facteurs de risque de maladie chronique, accroître sa capacité en matière de prévention et veiller à ce que tous les Ontariennes et Ontariens aient des chances égales en matière de santé.
Nous serions heureux si vous pouviez vous joindre à moi et au président-directeur général de ACO, le Dr Michael Sherar, le 20 mars, pour la publication d’Agir pour prévenir les maladies chroniques, qui aura lieu au Toronto Board of Trade.
Quelques semaines plus tard, la conférence TOPHC sur la santé publique en Ontario s’articulera autour des thèmes de la prévention, de la promotion de la santé et de la collaboration. Durant la conférence, qui aura lieu du 2 au 5 avril, Santé publique Ontario et l’Institut de recherche en services de santé (IRSS) publieront un rapport conjoint intitulé Incidence du tabagisme, de la consommation d’alcool, de l’alimentation, de l’activité physique et du stress sur la santé et l’espérance de vie en Ontario, qui examine les facteurs de risque sur le plan du comportement et leur incidence sur l’espérance de vie et l’espérance de vie ajustée en fonction de la santé en Ontario.
J’espère que vous pourrez vous joindre à nous à la TOPHC afin de rencontrer les nombreux partenaires qui travaillent dans le domaine de la santé publique en Ontario et de tirer avantage de leur expertise.

Quoi de neuf @ SPO
La transition de l’Alcohol Policy Network (APN) vers Santé publique Ontario débutera le 1er avril 2012. Santé publique Ontario prodiguera les services de l’APN par l’entremise de ses services de renforcement de la capacité sous la direction de la Dre Heather Manson et son équipe de promotion de la santé et de prévention des maladies chroniques et des traumatismes. Pour les professionnels de la santé publique, le transfert des services de l’APN signifiera un accès accru aux scientifiques, aux experts en contenu, à la recherche appliquée, ainsi qu’à la capacité d’évaluation de programmes, de planification et d’échange de connaissances de SPO.
Le 2 mars 2012, Santé publique Ontario a tenu son premier d’une série de trois ateliers sur les projets locaux de 2012. L’initiative des projets locaux favorise la collaboration des équipes de projets locaux à des projets de recherche et d’évaluation de programmes axés sur un thème, une intervention ou un programme en lien avec une question critique de santé publique. En utilisant l’intérêt, l’incidence et l’équilibre comme critères de priorisation, 78 représentants de 28 bureaux de santé ont collaboré pour déterminer les priorités de recherche et d’évaluation des projets locaux de 2012. Les bureaux de santé publique et autres collaborateurs qui n’ont pas participé à l’atelier 1 sont invités à se joindre à l’atelier 2 qui aura lieu en avril.
Infrastructure Ontario a annoncé la sélection du cabinet d’architectes Diamond Schmitt pour assurer la conception architecturale du nouveau laboratoire de Santé publique Ontario dans le cadre de la phase 2 du centre MaRS.
