Message from the President and CEO

Happy New Year from Public Health Ontario. As we look ahead to 2012, Public Health Ontario is focused on expanding the information, resources and supports we provide to our partners and clients. Following a comprehensive evaluation of infectious disease surveillance reporting in Ontario, including input from public health units and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, we launched a new monthly surveillance report in December 2011. This is just the first of a planned series of new surveillance products.

In the coming months, you will have greater access to more data and user-defined analytical capabilities as we expand Public Health Ontario’s online functionality and content. Our web-based strategy will support greater collaboration, deliver more virtual public health library services and enable more opportunities for virtual learning and professional development. Check the PHO events calendar for upcoming webinars on our planned virtual services.

With the recent migration of health promotion responsibilities from the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport to the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care (MOHLTC), we welcome the opportunity to continue to work with Assistant Deputy Minister Kate Manson-Smith and her team in the area of health promotion and chronic disease prevention. This is a key priority for us in the year ahead. Public Health Ontario and Cancer Care Ontario’s draft report on chronic diseases was released for consultation in November 2011 and we appreciate the extensive feedback provided by many stakeholders. Refinements and additional research to the report are ongoing, in consultation with expert panels. Public Health Ontario is also collaborating with ICES on two burden of disease reports for 2012: mental health and addiction, and key risk factors such as diet, physical activity, smoking and alcohol consumption.

In the next few weeks, you will be invited to participate in a client satisfaction survey about your perceptions of Public Health Ontario. The survey information will help us assess the quality, reliability, credibility, relevance and impact of our programs, services and knowledge products. We look forward to your feedback.

Registration is open and we look forward to gathering as a sector at April’s The Ontario Public Health Convention (TOPHC). With over 65% more abstract submissions than last year, the conference will be an excellent opportunity to learn, network and collaborate. In the meantime, we hope you will attend some of our many professional development events.

Santé publique Ontario vous souhaite une excellente nouvelle année. En 2012, Santé publique Ontario s’efforcera d’accroître les renseignements, les ressources et les soutiens qu’elle offre à ses partenaires et à ses clients. Après une évaluation complète des pratiques de déclaration liées à la surveillance des maladies infectieuses en Ontario, y compris les observations des bureaux de santé publique et du ministère de la Santé et des Soins de longue durée (MSSLD), nous avons lancé un nouveau rapport de surveillance mensuel (en anglais) en décembre 2011. Il s’agit du premier d’une série de nouveaux produits prévus en matière de surveillance.
Au cours des prochains mois, à mesure que Santé publique Ontario augmentera le contenu en ligne et les fonctionnalités de son site, vous aurez un meilleur accès à davantage de données et d’outils d’analyse définis par l’utilisateur. Notre stratégie axée sur le Web facilitera une collaboration accrue, permettra d’offrir davantage de services bibliothécaires virtuels liés à la santé publique et créera d’autres possibilités d’apprentissage et de développement professionnel virtuel. Consultez le calendrier d’activités de SPO (en anglais) pour découvrir les webinaires à venir concernant nos futurs services virtuels.

Au cours des prochaines semaines, vous serez invités à participer à un sondage sur votre perception de Santé publique Ontario. Les informations obtenues par ce sondage nous aideront à évaluer la qualité, la fiabilité, la crédibilité, la pertinence et l’impact de nos programmes, services et produits du savoir. Nous attendons avec intérêt de connaître vos commentaires.

L’inscription est ouverte et nous avons hâte de nous réunir en tant que secteur à l’occasion du Congrès de santé publique de l’Ontario - TOPHC (en anglais) qui aura lieu en avril. Puisque le nombre de résumés de recherche présentés a augmenté de 65 % par rapport à l’an dernier, le congrès sera une excellente occasion d’apprentissage, de réseautage et de collaboration. Dans l’intervalle, nous espérons que vous participerez à certaines de nos nombreuses activités de développement professionnel (en anglais).
