Online dilution calculator

To guide the preparation of an appropriate diluted solution of sodium hypochlorite to kill Clostridium Difficile, Public Health Ontario’s environmental health and infectious disease experts created an online chlorine calculator tool.

The tool automatically calculates the amount of bleach solution that should be diluted with water to get the desired concentration and is easy to use. This calculator is intended for use by public health units, health care facilities, child care centres, swimming pool operators, and general public (e.g., for disinfection of wells, home disinfection).

Enter the:

  1. Volume of solution required
  2. Desired concentration of sodium hypochlorite
  3. Concentration of bleach solution being used (found on the label of the bleach product)
  4. Press “enter”

The tool will automatically calculate the amount of bleach solution that should be diluted with water to get the desired concentration.

Important: when preparing the solution, the bleach solution should be added to the water, not vice versa.
