Monthly Infectious Diseases Surveillance Report

Public Health Ontario’s new monthly surveillance report, Monthly Infectious Diseases Surveillance Report, is now available.  Following an in-depth evaluation of infectious disease surveillance reporting in Ontario in collaboration with our partners at the local public health units and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the report reflects the infectious disease information needs across the province.

Each report will include:

  1. Infectious Disease in Focus — each month this section will highlight an infectious disease of interest, based on provincial epidemiology or situations of interest in surrounding jurisdictions
  2. Significant Reportable Disease Activity — identification of reportable diseases demonstrating significant changes in incidence in the current month and/or year compared to year-to-date or year-to-month 2009 and 2010 data
  3. Infectious Disease Activity in Surrounding Jurisdictions — a monthly review of ongoing or developing situations nationally or internationally with the potential for impact on the province of Ontario
  4. Telehealth report — analysis of call volume by syndrome to the provincial nursing helpline; this section will include all clusters of fever/ILI, GI and respiratory calls by geographic area, as well as overall trend analysis for the previous month
  5. Ontario Outbreak Review — accounting of the total number of outbreaks to date in the current calendar year compared to the two previous years, as well as breakdowns of respiratory outbreak incidence for current compared to past respiratory virus seasons
  6. Enhanced Surveillance Directives Discontinued — a summary of all ESDs closed in the previous month with a brief summary of the outcome of the investigations/directives
  7. Appendix 1 — Confirmed cases of reportable disease by month for Ontario – a comprehensive table of reportable disease incident counts and rates for the current calendar month and year with comparisons to 2009 and 2010 data.

Public Health Ontario continues to evaluate and develop a suite of surveillance products and strategies that will make public health data and intelligence available to our partners in the field. Reports will be adapted over time to reflect evolving needs and opportunities.
