Public Health Ontario, in collaboration with public health stakeholders, has developed a new program model to support the following key functions of public health practice in Ontario:
- Applied research and program evaluation: Applied research and program evaluation in the area of public health.
- Education and professional development: Continuing education for health professionals and leadership in undergraduate, graduate and continuing professional education of future public health professionals.
- Knowledge exchange: The synthesis, dissemination and diffusion of knowledge about public health.
This new program model was developed in consultation with public health units and associations, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Health Promotion and Sport. It comprises five program elements and associated services for each.
An interactive diagram of the new program model appears below.

For more information about the development of the program, please refer to the background information section of the Reports and resources page.
The new program model was introduced at a webinar on January 21, 2011.
The Exchange e-bulletin, which has provided information on Public Health Ontario’s new program model to support key functions of public health practice in Ontario — applied research, program evaluation, education, professional development and knowledge exchange (SRKE) — is now being incorporated into PHO Connections/Connexions SPO, an e-newsletter published by Public Health Ontario.
Updates on SRKE, as well as other Public Health Ontario resources and initiatives, can now be found in PHO Connections/Connexions SPO, which will be distributed to those who have previously subscribed to The Exchange. We hope you enjoy this e-newsletter and welcome your comments at feedback@oahpp.ca.

Library environmental scan report now available
We are pleased to announce the release of: Access to library resources and services for public health units in Ontario: Environmental scan report, August 2011 This report contains the results of an environmental scan of public health units conducted by Public Health Ontario in March and April 2011, to assess provincial capacity in library resources and services, assess the needs of health units without libraries in greater detail and identify service and resources gaps. The results of the scan will help inform the design of a new shared library services partnership for Ontario health units. For more information about library services, check the library services webpage.
Free student education workshop
The Student Education and Preceptorship (SPEP) Network is hosting a workshop this fall for all public health staff and managers who work with students. The workshop, “Public Health and the Text Generation,” will focus on the current generation in the workforce and will discuss tips on providing useful feedback and strategies to effectively work and learn together with students. The workshop will also provide participants with information about the SPEP Network along with highlights from the key informant survey and information about how to access the SPEP Resource Library. The free workshop will be held at six health unit sites across Ontario. View the flyer for more information and registration details.
