This paper provides an overview of the new program model that has been developed to strengthen and support applied research, program evaluation, education, professional development and knowledge exchange functions for Ontario’s public health system.

Webinar Introducing the New Program Model

PHO introduced the new program model at a webinar on January 21, 2011. More than 180 participants listened to Dr. George Pasut, Vice-President, Science and Public Health, introduce the new services, describe their alignment with other PHO activities, explain how they will help strengthen the Ontario public health system, and speak to opportunities for health units, practitioners and public health associations to help with their implementation.

Survey – Supporting Applied Research and Program Evaluation, Education and Professional Development, and Knowledge Exchange Functions in Public Health: Possible Program Elements Survey (July 2010) (PDF 125KB)

This survey was the first stage of consultation with public health units, associations and relevant ministries. It sought feedback on potential program elements detailed in PHO discussion paper, “Supporting Applied Research and Program Evaluation, Education and Professional Development, and Knowledge Exchange Functions in Public Health” (above).

A report containing the results of a July 2010 survey seeking feedback from the field on proposed elements of a new model to support applied research, evaluation, education, professional development and knowledge exchange in public health.

Focus Group Information

On October 5, 2010, representatives from each of the health units, public health associations and health ministries in Ontario attended a focus group to: share feedback from the survey; foster the development of a shared understanding of health unit perspectives across the province; consider, reflect on and confirm the priority elements; and refine the priority elements to inform the final program development and implementation.
