In partnership with the Ontario Hospital Association, PHO is developing an antimicrobial stewardship program within the province of Ontario. As of January 2013, all acute care hospitals undergoing accreditation must have an ASP in place in accordance with Accreditation Canada’s Required Organizational Practice (ROP). PHO has designed resources to assist hospitals in meeting that requirement. This program is geared to community-based hospitals with the goal of providing tools to help them implement ASPs when resources are limited. The first phase of the program assists hospitals in establishing antimicrobial stewardship programs within their own settings.
Antibiotic (Antimicrobial) Stewardship Program (ASP) definition: ‘Coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents by promoting selection of the optimal antimicrobial drug regimen, including dosing, duration of therapy and route of administration.’ SHEA, IDSA, PIDS Policy Statement on Antimicrobial Stewardship 2012 ICHE. 2012:33(4):322-7
Effective use of antimicrobials is an important component in the control of antibiotic resistant organisms and Clostridium difficile. By implementing ASPs, Ontario hospitals can improve patients' quality of care.
