Emergency Management Support

PHO’s Emergency Management Support team supplements and supports the province in its emergency planning and response, providing a broad range of scientific and technical specialization.

During emergencies, the team works closely with many areas of our organization - including the Public Health Ontario Laboratories, Infectious Disease Prevention and Control, Surveillance and Epidemiology, and Environmental and Occupational Health - to support the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, public health units and health professionals as they plan for and respond to health emergencies.

How does PHO respond in a consistent way?

We use the Incident Management System (IMS), the Ontario standard, as our organizing framework. This approach allows us to consistently leverage the work of all our partners in health care and emergency management, including all levels of government, industry, hospitals, and public health units. Our goal is to evolve the IMS approach into an efficient public health tool that standardizes and streamlines the management of health emergencies, such as outbreaks, to ensure a consistent framework and response across public health and health care systems in Ontario and beyond.
