Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC)

On April 1, 2011 the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) transferred responsibility for the functions of the Provincial Infectious Diseases Advisory Committee (PIDAC) to the Public Health Ontario (PHO), recognizing the alignment of PIDAC activities with PHO’s legislated mandate.

PHO is pleased to accept this transfer and welcomes its expert members from across the province as we move forward and build on PIDAC’s accomplishments. PHO has established a Coordinating Committee and four advisory committees (infection prevention and control, communicable diseases, surveillance and immunization) to provide expert advice, develop evidence-based knowledge products (best practice documents) and provide broad-based field advice. These advisory committees draw on the dedication of health care practitioners with expertise in infectious disease, infection prevention and control, epidemiology, public health, occupational health and safety and veterinary medicine.

PIDAC products will continue to be available and new expert guidance will be developed in partnership with PHO’s scientific and technical capacity. PIDAC was originally established in 2004 in response to the recommendation by the Expert Panel on SARS and Infectious Disease Control (Walker Panel) to provide a standing source of expert advice on infectious diseases in Ontario. Since that time, PIDAC has contributed a significant body of knowledge and advice to support the Chief Medical Officer of Health (CMOH) and the broader health system on matters related to prevention, surveillance and control measures necessary to protect the people of Ontario from infectious disease.
